ANDY THORBURN ENTERS RACE FOR OC BOARD OF EDUCATION
Former Classroom Teacher Launches Bid for Orange County Board of Education District 3
ORANGE COUNTY, CA — Today, former classroom teacher and businessman, Andy Thorburn, entered the upcoming 2020 contest to represent Orange County's 3rd District on the Board of Education.
In announcing his campaign, the former educator released the following statement:
"Too often politics and extremism have given way to dysfunction on the Orange County Board of Education. Our students, teachers, school employees and local neighborhoods deserve better than the hand they've been dealt.
"I'm running for the Board of Education to deliver the building blocks of change to our public schools so that we can ensure that every student receives a world class education. We can do this by bringing real change to the Board and ending the politics as usual. On the Board, I'll work to invest more in local classrooms and less on bureaucracy, pay teachers a real middle class salary, expand the use of technology in classrooms, increase STEM course options, college preparation and counseling programs, and after-school and extracurricular activities like the arts and music. We can, and we will, transform the Board of Education to create better public schools for all of Orange County's students. The Orange County Board of Education must fulfill its role as a leader on these issues, and under my leadership it will."
Andy Thorburn is a former classroom teacher, workers' rights advocate and successful businessman who is running to represent the Orange County Board of Education's 3rd District. After college, Thorburn started his career in public service as a high school teacher in Newark, New Jersey. His leadership abilities were recognized almost immediately, and he was elected to a senior position in the local chapter of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). Thorburn also later served on the boards of the local United Family Agency, an organization from which he adopted his children, and the local YMCA.
After leaving the classroom, Thorburn founded a small business that specialized in selling insurance to working families, particularly classroom teachers. This launched a truly remarkable career in business and philanthropy that has led to him creating hundreds of jobs and providing retirement security to countless Americans at home and abroad.
Previously, Thorburn led the international company Global Benefits Group and he's also the founder of the Global Benefits Group Foundation - a nonprofit that provides innovative new methods of financing like microloans to those who need them the most.
Thorburn has also been very active in community service organizations, including his current role on the Board of the Community Action Fund at the local Planned Parenthood chapter and the Executive Board of the Huntington Disease Taskforce. He had previously been active at Rotary International.
